Getting the right colour & how to apply it
Open your original image in a new graphic window on photoshop.
Choose a realistic colour for what you're trying to achieve, In this case we're colouring her hair brown, and as she's got quite light hair, we need to choose quite a dark brown. Choose the colour in the foreground palette.
Once you've found a colour suitable for you're job click ok. For this project I have used this colour brown: #1e0303. Now, all you have to do, is create a new layer on that graphic (Ctrl+Shift+N). Now, using a basic round brush, (doesn't matter if its the softening edge one), go over the area you're wanting to colourise, changing the brush size if necessary. Also, you may find it easier if you zoom in whilst painting over.
Changing the appearance
Now you have to change the effects of the layer that you've put the brush on. So right click on the layer, and go to blending options.
Now, on the drop down menu, where it says Blend Mode, Click the arrow, and go through the options to find the most suitable and attractive one.
For this project, I used Soft Light, to get a brunette effect. Overlay to get an auburn-brown effect & Hue to get a pink effect.
