How much does Robert Rodriquez love his fiancée Rose McGowan? So much that he might be risking the future of his next big film.
A source tells The New York Observer that Universal has backed out of financing the director's proposed remake of 'Barbarella' because Rodriquez is demanding that McGowan be cast in the title role.
The role was made famous by Jane Fonda in the 1968 original.
"It’s sort of embarrassing for everyone involved,” the source says. "No one thinks Rose can carry the movie, but Robert won’t listen." Jessica Alba , Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman have been rumored to be in the mix for the part as well. McGowan's biggest role to date came as the machine-gun-toting amputee in Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror,' his installment in the double feature 'Grindhouse,' which stalled miserably at the box office earlier this year.
Famed producer Dino De Laurentiis is overseeing the project but won't speak on the casting choice. "He’s technically independent but has a strong connection to Universal," says the source. "He wants to back Robert and his vision. But Robert’s vision is blurred by Rose.”
Rodriguez tells the Observer that Universal is just wary of the overall price tag, which is soaring around $100 million and that his choice to cast McGowan isn't an issue ... that Universal is "blown over" by early screen tests.
"She looks fantastic in the role," he says. "She was perfect for this part. She just has that daring look, a sort of classic sexiness that is also kind of futuristic.”
It was reported earlier this week that McGowan and Rodriguez were engaged. They met while filming 'Planet Terror' and their relationship, which was secret for some time, was blamed for Rodriguez's 16-year marriage to film producer Elizabeth Avellan fizzling.
